This is not the traditional mediterranean flavors I am used to in the Pacific NW, but I sure enjoyed the meal. If you like eggplant, be sure to try the eggplant spread. It was the best I've ever eaten. The chicken kabobs were good, as was the rice, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. The appetizer plate I would definitely order again. Try the vegetarian dolmas too. The owner came by to visit and the server was a very nice young man. I really like that they cook completely without MSG. They should have a sign up, as I would go back for that reason alone.

From reading the reviews, their is a mixed bag of opinions on this place, so you might try it yourself. Our experience was nothing but mediocre. Our Groupon required reservations, so we made them for 6:20 p.m. When we arrived, there was no one at the front to greet us and the entire restaurant was empty on a Thursday evening! To say the least, we were surprised. Shortly, a friendly woman appeared and seated us. Our waitress promptly brought us some kind of flat bread that seemed to have been taken straight from the microwave. In addition, she served a plate of raw onions, basil, parsley and beautifully flowered radishes, but we were never quite sure what we were to do with that. There wasn't much to the garden salad that only contained lettuce and one grape tomato. However, the house dressing was outstanding! My husband and I ordered chicken and filet mignon. I substituted onions in place of the tomatoes. The filet mignon was a huge disappointment as it was very thin and cooked very well done; it seemed more of an inexpensive cutlet! Thankfully, the chicken was better, but I was disappointed that none of the food had much seasoning -- very bland. A free tip here -- remember I mentioned the outstanding house Balsamic dressing? I dipped the meat in that and oh my, it became very tasty. If it had not been for the Groupon offer, I wouldn't have adventured into Caspian Bistro. I am thankful that we tried it, but we do not have any plans to return. Just wasn't my cup of tea but it might be for YOU! Some love it!

I was absolutely thrilled to learn about this restaurant! A woman at my gym who is of Arabic descent highly recommended it. She said outside of her own kitchen, this is the best place to eat! Well she was right! The service was fabulous and the food was delicious. The owner came over to make sure we were happy and made other recommendations for good restaurants to try. I can't wait to go back again and again!

I would ga e given it a 4 but waiter seemed rushed in a fairly empty weeknight restaurant, never came by to ask how my food was, then handed styrofoam cartons for me to transfer my leftovers. It felt more like a diner than a restaurant this evening. I'll give it another try though cause the food is totally worth it and last time when I came by for a pick-up, the staff was hospitable then. Oh well. I guess every restaurant has its bad service days.

This place is underrated. I've been here multiple times for lunch (but no dinner), and I think it is consistently solid. It's always surprising to me that there are so few people whenever I go there. The tea is wonderful, as is the oliveh salad (my bf's mummie is Russian and makes it all the time--a kind of potato salad with chicken, peas, and diced pickles...and I almost like Caspian Bistro's oliveh better...almost*). I've gotten the beef filet plate all the time--the rice, tzatziki, and fire roasted tomato are perfect compliments. If you really want a treat, get the persian ice cream! You might want to ask for it early, since it is pretty frozen. But O it is lovely--slightly sweet, flavorful, and full of yummie things.

Tried this place on a recent rainy evening... we had the place to ourselves. I'm guessing the storm chased folks away -- I hope it's usually a little busier than that, or it won't stay open long, and I want to come back sometime! We tried the platter for two, since it seemed like a good way to try a few different things: three meats, veggies, and rice. (It might have fed two pro wresters, or three and a half normal people. We took plenty of food home.) Everything was delicious; the chicken was particularly outstanding. There could have been a few more vegetables (the roasted squash seemed a bit skimpy) but it was a lovely blend of flavors as we sampled all the different things on the platter. We were too stuffed for dessert, which was too bad, because the various offerings in the dessert case looked fabulous. Next time I'll plan ahead.

Really expensive for cheap food. I feel like the only reason why this place is open is their ability to rip people off. I have been forced to come here with my family many times, and was never impressed. Actually, I had a friend who worked here, who was resisted pay from the owners, and had to fight to get their last paycheck after giving their two weeks notice, it took three months. The owners of this place are really sketchy and bully their employees from what i've heard.

The foods was delicious, my girlfriend liked it as well and she is not typically one to like mediterranean food. Good atmosphere and great waitstaff.

3.5 stars and only because I'm not used to the flavors of Persian spices. The service and ambiance here are all excellent. I haven't had much experience with Persian food but have heard that this place is the real deal. My fiancee and I were on the hunt to try a cuisine that we haven't had much experience with and stumbled across the awesome Yelp reviews for this place. There's a decent amount of vegetarian appetizers and salads as well as two entrees. My fiancee ordered the vegetable kabob that came with hummus, dolmeh, and kashk badenjan which is a Persian eggplant spread. The owner came by our table to thank us for coming in and instructed us to season the vegetable kabob with sumac if we wished. I tried the vegetarian ghormeh sabzi which is a stew containing sauteed herbs of cilantro, green onion, parsley, dried limes, red kidney beans, and special seasonings. It also came with a side of saffron basmati rice. We also ordered the special of the night which was a soup that I don't remember the name of. The stew and soup contained a lot of unfamiliar spices that I didn't quite enjoy. My fiancee really enjoyed the soup but we were both put off by the strong spices in the stew. Since we were here on a Saturday night, Caspian Bistro also featured belly dancing. The dancer was the same one who performs at Tasso's. I've been told that she's been performing for decades and is the best one in town. She's certainly the best one I've seen anywhere (even better than my belly dance instructor). I'm sure I'd rank this place higher if I could truly appreciate Persian food. I'll compare it to when I first had spicy food as a child or my first several tastes of wine and beer in college. It definitely takes some getting used to and once you do, you love it.

Came here with a friend. I ordered bhagala polo (lamb shanks served with flavored rice and snap peas) and it was delicious!!! Lamb shanks are not that hard to make but very difficult to perfect, and i'm very satisfied with the meal. The atmosphere and decor was just average. Nothing really stands out. if u want meditterenean food, you should pay this place a visit because they have a dishes on their menu that regular places won't have. Also, this place serves glutten free food and plenty of vegetarian option, and portion sizes are HUGE!! It might be just perfect for guys, but ladies, even if you are a big eater, the rice will get ya!

Reading the other reviews, it sounds like we dined at different places...I had a great experience! I went on a Saturday for lunch. It wasn't crowded, and service was pretty quick. There aren't a lot of veg options on the menu, so I got the vegetarian dolmehs (or dolmas) and the hummus. Both were fantastic! I like a pure, simple-tasting hummus, and it was perfect with warm pita. The dolmehs were also amazing - I even convinced my sometimes picky friend to try them, and she adored them too. My friend got the salad olivieh and wasn't in love with it, but liked her chicken kebab.

Went in Tuesday for a late lunch not busy at all.. Food was Great! Service was the worst I have ever had!! Waitress was the WORST!! Waited 10mins for drinks and gave the wrong change. We were so over we didn't care to ask the the $5 she shorted us. Didn't feel like waiting 20mins to get the change back. If it wasn't for their great food I would never go back..

A Groupon brought me in and this place was definitely not what I expected. Based on the Groupon description, I was thinking that it would be Greek restaurant, but this was more of middle eastern place. I ironically had just come back from a 4 month work assignment in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and this place reminded me so much of the little local places. I swear they must have the same CD playing as all of the places in the UAE. The food was good, just like in the middle east. I highly recommend the hummus; you can tell it is homemade. Make a point to go on Friday or Saturday, there is a belly dancer that puts on a great show and does a wonderful job of interacting with the customers. She got my non-dancing boyfriend to get up and take some lessons in front of everyone!

I love coming here, but for some reason tonight the appetiser of kashk bademjan seemed to be less than usual as did the platter for two. I tried their Napoleon dessert for the first time but it didn't live up to my expectations. It was too creamy and sweet. And the pastry part did not seem fresh. However, I generally have a good experience here which is why I would still return here for lunch or dinner. It is especially fun on Friday or Saturday nights with their belly dancer who is very sweet and social! Although you have to make sure you catch her, she doesn't dance for too long :)

My son and I visited this place sometime this past summer when we were on a huge Mediterranean kick. Of the stuff I remember getting, the food was pretty good. We ordered a kabob platter for two. It came with beef, filet mignon, and chicken breast kabobs, but we asked to sub the chicken for shrimp for an up-charge. It came with basmati rice and grilled vegetables, but the portion of vegetables was outrageously small. The filet mignon was fantastic, as was the shrimp. It was at this visit that I finally decided that I just do not like ground beef kabobs. The charbroiled tomato they serve is really quite heavenly. I know that we ordered appetizers and dessert, but don't remember what they were. Located in a dying strip mall on Metcalf, it's not a fancy place. The interior is blah. The service was fine and though all the food was pretty good, I didn't find anything to be "special" and our meal was far too expensive for what we got. I'm still deciding whether I want to go back.

Caspian Bistro is okay. A Persian (Iranian) restaurant, the food is sort of a cross between Mediterranean and Pakistani food. Service here is good, and this place used to have an awesome lunch mini-buffet, but apparently it is no longer the case. For lunch, the menu is extremely weak. Gyro meat is very scare on your gyro sandwich and the pita bread cracks at the bottom. this indicates that the pita bread used there is not the freshest. Besides this mishap, the food does indeed taste delicious and is satisfying. Once upon a good life, it used to be that you could order an item off the lunch menu for around $8 and you had access to this stupendous mini-buffet. It was full of basmati rice, grilled veggies, and skewered chicken. This was all you can eat and it was the single thing that made this place relevant. The restaurant was closed for a few months (Ownership change) and apparently the new owner is still "thinking" about bringing it back. I have not had dinner here. The menu for dinner is simplistic, a little on the pricey side, ($20 to $60) however it is something that entices me. I hope to give it a try in the next few months and hopefully edit the review accordingly. As for the moment, the place is a suggestion and recommended if you are looking for something different.

I had lunch at the Bistro today. The facility and service was great the food is the real Persian stuff. Lunch was under $10 total and plentiful. I could not find anything to complain about, the restaurant was great.

after a few people told me to try Caspian Bistro for its Persian Fare, i decided to give it a try for lunch. the lunch menu was in the $8 range. we ordered hummous, ground beef kebab and and my husband ordered a chicken gyro. the hummous was ok, but bland and had some red paprika??? dumped on top. definitely not the best i have had. then came lunch. Very very very ordinary. grilled, almost burned veggies with....literally, a strip of TASTELESS hamburger meat! my husband's was pressed gyro meat, like the cr*p found in greek street vendor carts. this place was terrible! not Persian at all! they charged us a whopping $30 for this tasteless food. i will NEVER go there ever again..will go to Taj Mahal or Ruchis for tasty Indian food. evidently, Caspian doesn't care to compete in a city that has some really spectacular food.

Best beef koobideh I have ever had. have tried almost 25+ persian restaurants including some in California. 4 star because koobideh size is a little smaller then others.

I've been here with my husband a handful of times within the last couple years and this place gets worse and worse every single time we come here. We recently went there last week due to a couple friends stating they have a new chef and the food is back to being super good but we were heavily disappointed. The chicken kabobs and koobideh had no taste whatsoever. The naan they serve doesn't even taste/look like naan. They used to serve salat with the entrees and now its just some gross purple lettuce (idk what it was). Somehow our bill racked up to over $50 for some mediocre food. Not sure what happened to this place. The service was also extremely slow. There were only 2 other tables eating dinner at the same time and the waiter was so slow. Not sure why. We live by KC Grill and Kabob in Lenexa and that place is 100000x better than this place. You also get more for you money and the food is amazing. I'll be eating there from now on!

I've only ever eaten here at lunch and have never had bad or slow service. It's where I go when I'm in the mood for a gyro, as it's the closest place to where I work to get one. The doner gyro is always good, well-stuffed with meat and veggies. Their fries are excellent, which you might not expect. And I don't know what kind of tea they use, but it's the best iced tea in town!

  • Dylan K.

The lunch is fairly good, gyros and kabob are probably the best in Kansas. but it's the dinner and appetizers, are where it excels. humus being obvious, they have an eggplant dip that is outstanding. but I'm writing this review simply because of the stew. especially the pomegranate, walnut and chicken stew. My goodness graciousnesses talk about inspiring new explorations in palate.

Lunch Kebabs are back on the menu!! Woohoo!! I picked up the Chicken Kebab for $8.75 today, and it is ooohhhh soooo goood!! They have revamped their Tzatziki sauce to include garlic, which makes it sooo much better! We will be going for lunch more often from now on! Ohh, and Kids eat free if you dine in (Only the Koobideh meals though)

This is the best Persian cuisine in town. I love it and take my family here often. Always fresh and options for everyone. For meat lovers, gluten free and vegetarians. It's a gem. Service is sometimes slow. Try the kashke bademjan for an appetizer it's better than hummus! And Chicken Sultani with a side cucumber yogurt sauce for your entree. The tiramisu is homemade and delish for dessert with tea.

My homeboy, MC Hendu Ice, treated us for a lunch extravaganza. Sumac shakers on the table for adding red dots to your food should the mood strike. Dolmas were big and fat and yummo. Pitas were strangely leavened, I guess to appeal to Midwestern sports roll allegiance. I wanted to save more room for dinner, but I still had a big ass dinner anyway! Hee hee, some random douchebag called me a douchebag for this review! It's just always nice to be noticed.

We preordered dinner several days in advance for a party of 29, we showed up at 730pm, didn't get any water until 815pm. After reordering and confusion, we finally got our food at 948 pm--horrendous service and the quality of food can easily be found elsewhere in KC!! Additionally, we were a big party and at the least we should have received a warm greeting from the owner sometime during our dinner, all we got was a long wait and mandatory 18% tip charge! No discounts, no apologizes, no basic operational management skills Will never come back or recommend to friends.... :-( ZERO STARS!!

Bad service, just okay food, outdated decor. Starting with a language barrier, the server could not understand a word we said. I asked for a wine list four times until the waiter understood I was saying wine. Once we ordered our two glasses of wine, it was about 30 minutes before we got them. The restaurant wasn't very busy, they just seemed extremely disorganized. The drinks or food ordered by others was mistakenly delivered to us multiple times. The bread/appetizer they bring to the table tasted like a dish towel. My boyfriend has a gluten allergy, but they don't have a gluten free menu nor could our server understand us when we said the word gluten. When asked if certain things were gluten free, neither he nor another server that came to assist knew for sure. Eventually he went back to the kitchen to ask. Once our food arrived, it was mediocre. We won't be back.

We tried this place out for the first time last night. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was a little on the expensive side (but most Mediterranean places are)... The portion sizes were large and we did get our monies worth of food I believe. Only complaint would be the service, there were only 2 servers for the whole place. It is small but they were running around like crazy (didn't help there were 10-15 tops in the place as well). Next time we are in the mood for Greek we will definitely consider going here first! Also, it would have been nice to see a manager or the owner somewhere, maybe come out and introduce themselves.

I admit it. I am one of the Groupon slackers who wait until the last minute to use it before the full amount expires. I was in good company when dining at Caspian Bistro as almost every table had a Groupon too. Our punishment? Horrible, horrible service. The lesson learned - don't go here within a week of a Groupon expiration. Once you're actually seated you will sit there waiting and waiting and waiting and wondering if you're on an episode of Kitchen Nightmares or the Three Stooges. The food, when we did receive it, was good except the grilled veggies and chicken were burned. It took us less than 10 minutes to plow through the entire platter. I don't think I would return unless I had a Groupon and used it well in advance of the expiration. The majority of the food was tasty but overall everything seemed pricey.

Here is my two cents. Anywhere in Iran, the Kanab always comes with two skewers of whatever meat is ordered and the ample amount of rice. This restaurant is taking advantage of the fact that most people around kc area are not aware of this fact. Portion sixes are very small and prices high. For a authentic Iranian food try other cities, for instance Reza's in Chicago

Having passed by Caspian Bistro umpteen times (it's not very far from where I live) we finally decided to try it tonight with a visiting cousin from California who said he'd love some Middle Eastern food. (He lives in Mendocino, which apparently doesn't have any Middle Eastern restaurants, but he'd been reminiscing this afternoon about the wonderful food he'd had on a recent trip to Turkey.) From its name and references on the menu, I assumed the food at Caspian Bistro is Persian, but at least one reviewer here says it's Armenian. I suppose it could be a combination of the two, because there is (or was) a substantial Armenian community in Iran. In any case, we enjoyed our dinner very much. The atmosphere is inviting, the service was very friendly, and the food delicious. There were five of us, so we ordered the Shamshiri Platter, which officially serves four. This consists of a large assortment of kabobs: filet mignon kabob (barg), ground beef kabobs (koobideh), ground chicken kabobs (chicken koobideh), marinated chicken breast kabob, and marinated cornish hen kabob. This was all accompanied by platters of grilled vegetables and basmati rice, broiled tomatoes, and green salads! Although the Shamshiri is supposed to serve four (for $59.99) it could easily serve six or more, and we took home a LOT of food, which will make a very satisfying lunch! Everything was delicious, we thought. Persian (or Armenian) food is well but subtly spiced. All the different kabobs on the Platter had different flavorings, depending on the marinades or seasonings used, but it was all good, as were the accompaniments. Our visiting cousin was disappointed that the Shamshiri Platter didn't include any lamb dish, so he ordered an additional rack of lamb for the table. It came cut into delicate chops -- they had also been marinated and then grilled, so they had a wonderful smoky flavor. They were extremely flavorful and tender, cooked medium, and tasted fresh. We all agreed we'd come back! We'll have to try some of the other things on the menu, but if we come as a group it's kind of hard to resist the Shamshiri Platter for value and general deliciousness! If you get it, though, you probably won't have room for some of the great-looking home-made desserts on display at the entrance! They're described as Persian, but some are obviously Western cakes and pastries, like Napoleons, that must have become popular in Iran and adopted as their own. Something else to look forward to on our next visit!

As Armenian restaurants in suburban KC go, Caspian Bistro hits the spot. Armenian is slightly different than Persian cuisine so the spices and ingredients may not be exactly what you expect. Amenian cuisine incorporates liberal use of tahini, which is basically sesame seeds blended into a paste that is similar to the consistency of peanut butter. My wife doesn't like tahini so the hummus is out for her at Caspian. Skip the filet mignon, it's not great. Go for the chicken or lamb kabobs instead. I typically go for the chicken barg which is top notch. Load up on the grilled tomatoes and vegetables, be forewarned that a side of tomatoes and veggies is big enough to share with 4-5 people. The owner is a very nice guy and he will patiently explain the Armenian spices and flavors if asked. This is a great spot for a business dinner when you can't take another night of KC BBQ or Steak. My colleagues who travel to KC from Asia love Caspian and always ask to go back.

My wife and I were in the mood for Middle Eastern food so we checked out Caspian Bistro. I don't know if the food is considered Armenian or Persian but I can tell you that it is 100% awesome. We ordered the Caspian Platter (for two) and this consisted of 1 chicken kabob, 1 flet mignon (barg) kabob, and 1 ground beef (koobideh) kabob plus grilled vegetables and basmati rice. Each kabob was delicately seasoned and juicy. The vegetables (zucchini, squash, tomato, and onion) were grilled to perfection as they had the char but still had some texture. The rice was also amazing. The only negative was the dinner salad that was served prior to the dish. My wife barely had a cup of salad mix however once the main course was served, it really didnt matter. I will definitely come back to Caspian Bistro. I've been told that sometimes they have belly dancers. This is the kind of place that will be a regular spot for us.

This place suffers from a double whammy of bland boring food and bland boring service. There is no reason for Middle Eastern food to be bland. I think this may be the proprietor's attempt at dumbing down the food for an American crowd, but it's truly not good. When we ate there, our waitress was glum and slow. Drinks not refilled and never stopped by to ask how the food was or if we needed anything else. The hubby had been here a couple of times without me and reports it's consistently meh.

We stopped by a couple of weeks ago on what appeared to be a slow Friday lunch. I ordered the Chicken kabob and it was delicious, the meat was wonderfully juicy and it was a lot of food. The tomato was nicely grilled and rice was good. I also tried my friends fesenjon with vegetarian Ghormeh Sahzi and both were delicious! I visited once on a Friday evening and it seemed like the air conditioning wasn't working very well. I made sure to drink lots of cold water, but it was not what I'd call comfortable. There was a big group and when I tried ordering something the waitress said they group had ordered multiples of the item and they had run out. More recently I visited with a group of coworkers on a Thursday and service was slow. It took a long time to get our food and even longer to get the tab. They didn't even offer me a to go box and I was in a hurry to get back to work so I left the food. Overall, I'd call the place inconsistent with poor administration. The food is good though, and there aren't too many options for Persian food around here. So, I'm sure I'll be back but I won't recommend the place without an honest warning.

Like most good restaurants I stumbled upon the Caspian Bistro accidentally. It sits in a strip mall style business lot on the east side of metcalf at 91st street. It happens to be by Sallys beauty supply, where I happen to get my special conditioner. Shopping for conditoner makes me hungry and I stopped by to check it out. I was in for a great suprise. For some reason, I blindly figured it was an American grill and when I found out it was Persian and Mediterranean cuisine, I was thrilled. The bistro is farely new and they boast a yummy meditarian menu. I ordered the beef kabob with yogurt sauce and fries. The food was quick, the service was friendly and attentive and the lunch price was affordable. With just a water my bill was under $10.(until I ordered dessert). The beef was perfectly cooked, not too tough.and I love this type of food because without heavy cheeses or breads you feel full yet not uncomfortably stuffed. They now offer a $7.50 lunch special that is srerved Tuesday through Saturday 11-3. I tried the baklava for dessert and it was delicious, creamy and tasted fresh, and was affordable for $2.95. The Caspian Bistro will get my business again.

I'm Persian and this place is the real deal. We tried this place while in town with some other Persian friends of ours. Between seven of us, I got to try many things on the menu. Everything was delicious. I especially liked the jujeh kabob and the rose water ice cream. Delicious!!

Been here twice now, about a year and a half apart, and I can conclusively say this is by far the worst Mediterranean food restaurant I've ever been to. The food is AWFUL, the service is offensively non-existent, the decor is hilariously ridiculous (box fan glued to a flat screen tv stand in the corner lol), waaaaay overpriced and super slow. There is one other table here and it still took 30 mins for our lunch special to arrive...and it was completely flavorless and cold when it finally did arrive. The "basmati rice" obviously is just minute white rice with spots of a super yellow "butter" substance. The gyro sandwich was truly pathetic: the pita was thin, flat and cold; the meat was bland and cold; the onions were just hunks of raw white onion; and the tzatziki sauce was blue cheese with a TON of lemon juice and garlic flavor. There was not a single redeeming thing to our visit. Oh, the waitress didn't clear anything off our table the whole meal, so we had stacks of dirty plates crowding us the whole time. Lol. Awful.

While looking for a new spot to eat we came across this wonderful bistro. Having seen it on the corner several times its modest exterior is no reflection of the great ambiance and wonderful eatery contained within. The place is clean, and well organized. The service was fantastic, spot on. The food was amazing, very much among our favorites on first try. With Gluten free, and Vegetarian options its pretty safe for any company you might have with you. I will return here (soon).

The ambiance was cheesy. The lobby smelled of sewage. The food was overpriced and mediocre at best. The rice was bland, the pitas were stale, the hummus was soupy, the lamb was mostly fat and very slimy. However, my real complaint isn't about the food or the atmosphere, it's about the service. My god. It was horrible. Not only was the service impressively slow, but our waiter was comically bad. My sister and I tried to order cocktails, to which our waiter said, "I'll be right back." Ten minutes later he reappeared and said, "We're out." Out? Of cocktails? I was looking at a fully-stocked bar, mind you, and while gesturing to an array of liquor bottles I said, "You don't have any vodka? No gin? Nothing?" He shook his head, "No. We're out," he said. So we each ordered a glass of wine. It took a solid 20 minutes for our wine to arrive, and when it did, we had been served about an inch and a half of wine IN MARTINI GLASSES. Any waiter old enough to serve alcohol should know the rudimentary differences in stemware. It's not that difficult. The whole dining experience was just awkward, irritating, and the place had absolutely no redeeming qualities.

The service by our beautiful persian server was excellent, it seems that you pay for the service, ambiance....we had just missed the gorgeous belly dancer about to perform...but the price for just the food was a on the high end for the portion size. Good flavors, good food authentic as close as you'll get to homemade persian food, unless you have an iranian friend : )
